Data Manager (Permanent Part-Time) Wits PHRU at AJ Personnel

Main objective of the position:

  • Adhere to processes and procedures in place to develop and manage clinical trial study databases and produce high quality study data
  • Staff management

Key performance areas:

  • Meet with relevant stakeholders to ensure planning and data requirements at the start of a study or as needed
  • Determine the protocol specifications related to the project
  • Determine the type of database based on the customer’s needs
  • Design case report forms (CRF) according to protocol (project specific) and study record (compilation of user manual)
  • Test and ensure that the database is correctly configured
  • Make sure the study setup is done correctly by performing variable validation
  • Develop a data quality management plan according to the relevant template
  • Design a database to ensure patient follow-up schedules are adhered to
  • Identify users and grant access accordingly before the start of the study, and as needed
  • Train users on the new database at the start of the study, or as needed
  • Ensure training records and CRF completion guidelines are signed off and submitted in accordance with relevant SOPs
  • Ensure the correct live implementation of the study database once validation of the study setup is complete
  • Document all necessary processes and procedures, in accordance with relevant data management SOPs
  • Ensure that the data management study file is completed and maintained in accordance with relevant data management SOPs
  • Monitor issues that arise that may require additional staff training, CRF changes
  • Maintain the database specification document, which records changes to variables, as needed
  • Accurately populate database structural change logs, which document structural changes made to the database
  • Test/document all database structural/variable changes
  • Execute/monitor data quality assurance processes as outlined in the study data quality management plan
  • Perform/monitor data quality control processes
  • Ensure that corrective actions are implemented in accordance with the code of conduct and in consultation with Data
  • Head of operations and/or HR department
  • Ensure effective day-to-day workforce planning
  • Ensure staff training and development occurs as and when required
  • Perform and facilitate development and performance reviews
  • Ensure the management of leave in accordance with company policy and procedure
  • Take responsibility and accountability for tasks and activities and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow up to ensure quality and productivity standards of own work are maintained consistently and accurately
  • Notify relevant parties of missed tasks or deadlines and provide appropriate means of resolution

Minimum education and training required:

  • 12th grade
  • Certificate of good clinical practice in force
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Technical degree related to database development and management, SAS training/certification
  • MS Office at an advanced level

Minimum professional experience required:

  • 5 years of clinical data management experience in a related position

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy development and advocacy on issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.

In recent years, the unit’s work has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
